Turning Wastes into Artworks

Turning Wastes into Artworks

Kitchen wastes, such as food scraps and vegetable leftovers, are usually just get thrown away to the bins. Who knows that those wastes can turn into beautiful and unique handicrafts? It was revealed on a workshop about how to make compost art at Petungsewu Wildlife Education Center (P-WEC) with Ms. Kristien Yuliarti, last Sunday (2/6/2013). In the workshop attended by more than 50 people of different ages and backgrounds, the attendants were encouraged and guided to transform kitchen wastes into imaginative paintings.

The process was quite simple, but it requires scrupulosity and artistry. To illustrate panoramic scenery of mountains, they made use of vegetable snippets and put them together to form a mountain shape on a piece of carton. After it was done, the painting could be photographed to be seen on a computer or printed.

Various paintings were created by the workshop participants. There was a participant who made a painting of fish, made from spinach leaves. Other person made a handicraft from eggshells. Qoharudin Ahmad, one of the participants who made a painting of turtle from vegetable scraps, said "I did not know that kitchen wastes can be turned into lovely pictures." Other student participants also enjoyed the workshop very much, let alone it was conducted in the pleasant environment of P-WEC.
